Our History
The
Ambrosia Bakery opened its doors on December 3, 1993. Owners Felix and Cheryl
Sherman are natives of New Orleans. They started the bakery to provide beautiful
cakes and delicious desserts to the people of Baton Rouge. Looking back, they
can truly say that a lot of things happened for a reason. Felix has a background
in management from a local beverage company. He learned the ins and outs of that
business, beginning as a route truck driver and working his way up to branch
manager. There, he learned just how to successfully lead a team of people in
sales and marketing. Cheryl began decorating cakes in the early 1980’s, and
spent some time working for others in the bakery business and also in gift
shops. After losing his job of 27 years due to a company merger, Felix knew that
he and Cheryl had to find something, and that it may be too late for them to get
jobs at their ages. Even though the thought had been dwelling for many years,
they finally decided to start their own business.
Take a Video Tour!
We first opened the bakery at 13213 Perkins Rd. in a 1200-sq.
ft. building in the Perkins Plaza. After three years in that building, it was
time to expand. The Ambrosia Bakery is now located at 11358 Perkins Rd., in a
4200+ sq. ft. building, approximately 1 mile from their original location.
Due to the demand of baked goods in the Baton Rouge area we are just about
forced to upgrade for a third time! This is a very exciting move for the family
business. Property was recently purchased on Seigen Lane between the I-10 and
Perkins Road. So we won’t be moving far however, it will be a much larger
location. In fact, we will be going from 4,200 square feet to over 8,200 square
feet. Today we employ a staff that ranges from 50 to 60 people depending on the
season. This new building will not only allow us the space to actually move
around in the building without bumping into each other. It will also allow us
the opportunity to offer much more to our loyal customers of over 14 years.
As
you can see progress on our "New" location is moving along very quickly! We
are just a few short weeks away from opening at our new Siegen Lane location.
With a whole new "look & feel" you will be very excited about your Ambrosia
Bakery experience.
At the new location we will have a large dining area that will allow you to
bring friends & family and even business associates for breakfast or lunch. We
will be offering a new "Deli" menu made with fresh croissants, sour dough
bread and much more.... and of course great desserts to go with it!
We will also be enlarging our "Wedding Department" with plenty of space and
sample wedding cakes to view in a great atmosphere.
All
this along with a great variety of fresh pastries for your special occasions,
made just for you by our pastry chef.
The expected move in date will be early September 2008 so be sure to drop in
and come see us and bring a friend!
The name "Ambrosia" comes from the Latin term for the food of the gods, and
that is just what Felix and Cheryl wanted the image of their bakery to be. The
Shermans have three sons, Felix Jr., David, and Michael.
